Why Is Laughter Good?

Have you ever been amazed by the scripture, “A joyful, cheerful heart brings healing to both body and soul. But the one whose heart is crushed struggles with sickness and depression“? (Psalm 17:22TPT) Laughter does some amazing things!

According to HelpGuide.org, “laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain, and protects you from the damaging effects of stress. It relaxes the whole body, protects the heart, and releases endorphins (the body’s natural feel-good chemicals). It also burns calories, diffuses anger and conflict, and may even help you live longer.”

Psalm 2 talks about the nations raging and the king’s of the earth plotting evil. And in reaction to all that it says, “God-Enthroned merely laughs at them; the Sovereign One mocks their madness!” (Psalm 2:4TPT)

Sometimes the enemy tries to convince us that he has power over us, that he can freely do what he desires. Yet we know that is not true. The enemy was totally defeated at the cross. Every day, though, the news media and other voices around us are telling us about the power of the enemy. All that fuels fear.

Family Interaction

So today when you gather round your table, take some time and laugh together. Tell jokes, share something funny that happened one time, or just sit and laugh for no reason at all.

Laugh as God laughs in the heavens. Laugh and let that laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your mood, and release those mood-changing chemicals into your brain. Let that laughter bring healing to your body and your soul. And remind the enemy that he is a defeated foe!

Father, today we rejoice with You! We shake off the chains of fear and oppression brought on by the negative words spoken all around us. We look to Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith, and agree with Him and all He has told us. His word is true and greater than anything the enemy can say. Thank You that You have given us the gift of laughter! Amen.

God’s Provision

Imagine for a moment what it must have been like for the Israelites who wanted to leave Egypt. They were slaves there and the Egyptian government had severely worsened their working conditions. Moses had been sent by God to lead them out of Egypt, but Pharaoh would not let them go. The country had endured plagues of water turning to blood, an infestation of frogs, then lice, then flies, then the death of all Egyptian livestock, then boils, then hail, then an infestation of locusts, and then darkness over the land for three days. Yet still Pharaoh would not let God’s people go.

Because of the hardness of Pharaoh’s heart, God then proclaimed that each Egyptian family would suffer the loss of their first born. But to the Israelites He spoke a promise. He instructed them that each household should sacrifice a lamb and put its blood on the doorposts of their home. The first born of each home with blood on the doorpost would be spared.

And so it was. God protected the Hebrew children and Pharaoh finally let the Israelites leave Egypt. God had proved Himself strong on behalf of His people.

And that brings us to today when we are facing a worldwide plague. The Israelites had the blood of a lamb for their protection. We have the blood of Jesus! God’s protection is over our homes just as He protected the Israelites. All around them people were affected by the plagues, but they were kept safe. Do you trust our Lord to do the same for you today?

Family Interaction

As you gather round your table today remember the Israelite families as they gathered around theirs the night of the Passover. As the first borns all around them were taken, their families remained safe. Share with each other what you think that night must have been like for them.

Do you feel safe within your home? Do you believe God is protecting you? Talk about these things as a family. Instead of feeling “stuck” at home, talk about God’s protection over you there.

Lord, long ago the homes that had blood on their doorposts were safe. Today we are Your home. You live within us and we recognize that the blood of Jesus protects us in this hour just as You protected the Israelites long ago. Show us how to share with others what it means to belong to You. We have so many ways to communicate electronically during this time in our homes. Help us make the most of it. Thank You, Jesus, for Your great love for us! Amen

A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you. Psalm 91:7

Right now there is a lot of fear going around our world. Some people have even gone past fear to panic. We face an unseen enemy. 99% of all newscasts are filled with statistics about the virus, where the latest outbreak is, how many are sick, how many have died… It is a constant barrage that fuels fear and worry.

The Lord tells us in His word that fear involves torment (1 john 4). And truly that is the case. Yet His word tells us something else even more powerful. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:78). And “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

Peace that surpasses all understanding means we can be at peace in Jesus when all around us are terrified. There truly is no way to understand it in the natural. It comes from within, from our spirit, from His Spirit living within us.

Family Interaction

Are you afraid right now? As you gather round your table today, talk about what each one fears. Be honest and open with each other. Write down those fears.

Now bring those fears to Jesus. As you give them to Him, receive His great love for you. Allow His power to overcome those fears as His love engulfs you. Sit quietly in His presence and just let Him minister to you.

Then take a red pen and cross out the words on that list you have written. Let that red ink symbolize His blood that was shed to set you free from fear. He is greater than any virus! No virus can live in His presence. And for all who have received Him, He lives within us. We command fear to go in Jesus’ name!

When you sit enthroned under the shadow of Shaddai,
you are hidden in the strength of God Most High.
He’s the hope that holds me and the Stronghold to shelter me,
the only God for me, and my great confidence.
He will rescue you from every hidden trap of the enemy,
and he will protect you from false accusation and any deadly curse.

His massive arms are wrapped around you, protecting you.
You can run under his covering of majesty and hide.
His arms of faithfulness are a shield keeping you from harm.
You will never worry about an attack of demonic forces at night
nor have to fear a spirit of darkness coming against you.
Don’t fear a thing!

Whether by night or by day, demonic danger will not trouble you,
nor will the powers of evil launched against you.
Even in a time of disaster, with thousands and thousands being killed,
you will remain unscathed and unharmed. you will be a spectator as the wicked perish in judgment, for they will be paid back for what they have done!

When we live our lives within the shadow of God Most High,
our secret hiding place, we will always be shielded from harm.
How then could evil prevail against us or disease infect us?
God sends angels with special orders to protect you wherever you go,
defending you from all harm. If you walk into a trap, they’ll be there for you and keep you from stumbling. You’ll even walk unharmed among the fiercest powers of darkness, trampling every one of them beneath your feet.

For here is what the Lord has spoken to me: “Because you have delighted in me as my great lover, I will greatly protect you. I will set you in a high place, safe and secure before my face. I will answer your cry for help every time you pray, and you will find and feel my presence even in your time of pressure and trouble. I will be your glorious hero and give you a feast.
You will be satisfied with a full life and with all that I do for you.
For you will enjoy the fullness of my salvation!” Psalm 91 TPT

God Is With US

The presence of God brings peace (Philippians 4:6-7) , protection (Psalm 91:9-10), provision (Philippians 4:19), power (Romans 15:13), and purpose (Romans 8:28).

Family Interaction

Fear is rampant right now. It is fueled by the media and others who are focused only on what the enemy is doing in this hour. We who know the Lord, though, experience all that His presence brings. Gather your family around your table today and share together what it means to live in the presence of God.

Have each family member share what these words (peace, protection, provision, power, purpose) mean to them. Encourage each one to share examples they might have experienced. Younger children might like to draw a picture instead of sharing with words.

As each one shares, keep in mind the table is a place of blessing and esteeming. This is a time of sharing what the words mean to each one, not what the correct definition of the word is. Each person’s answer will be about their understanding and experience. Receive what each one shares without judgement or correction.

Some family members may not be able to relate to the fullness of what God provides. That is okay. They do not have to share, but hopefully they will be encouraged by what others do.

This is a suggested prayer. Feel free to pray your own.

Father, we thank You for sending Jesus and Jesus we thank You that You were willing to die in our place so that we might inherit all that is Yours. We declare today that You are our Lord and our Savior and we receive all that Your presence in our home gives to us. We do not walk in fear in this hour because You are our peace and our protection. We do not lack because You are our provision. We are not helpless because You are our power. And we do not drift or wander aimlessly in this hour because You have great purpose for each of our lives. You are our all in all! Amen.

Around Your Table

As you gather, send us a picture of your family around your table. ourtable@2equal1.com

God is calling His families back around the family table. Our home is the place where we grow and mature. It is the place where we learn to love unconditionally, to forgive, and to bless. And it should be the place where we learn who we are in Christ, where we learn to walk in faith, and where we learn how to be overcomers in this world.

Almost a year ago God began to speak to us about bringing families back around the family table. We have prayed since then asking Him how to do that when family schedules were so crazy. With work, school, sports and other activities, it was difficult for families to find time to even eat together around one table, much less spend more time there.

But now circumstances have changed. The current situation is forcing families back into the home. Couples are working from home. Children are being schooled online. That family has once again returned to the home full time. While for many it may seem a time of crisis, the Lord has been preparing for this time all along. It is time for families to gather together around the table to hear from Him and to encourage each other, to talk, and to pray together.

What the enemy meant for harm can become one of the most powerful hours for homes around the world. God has given us five purposes for gathering around the table. The are based on the acronym TABLE – a place to Teach, Abide, Bless, Love, and Esteem.

We will be giving you ideas and resources for the times you gather together. The family table includes family members of all ages and so we encourage you to include all family members in discussions and activities. God is going to do some powerful things around your table in the coming days!
